      <image:title>Portrait Gallery - David Brown</image:title>
<image:caption>David, here, in my kitchen initiated my interest in this series of kitchen portraits. There is a movement called "kitchen sink" painters. Painters like Walter Sickert who washed their brushes in their kitchen sink like I do. I have a chess piece floor like the Dutch Baroque painters, and David's big lower lip and angular forehead reminds me of the Baroque painter Velasquez. It is common in Baroque painting to see paintings of painting!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portrait Gallery - Self Portrait</image:title>
<image:caption>Speaking of the Dutch Baroque here I am calling back the Vermeer work "The Allegory of Painting" Another painter besides the Baroque whom I looked at closely for full size portraits was Corot whose small näive works I found purely motivated and wonderful. The kind of painting that makes you want to paint.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portrait Gallery - Nick, Katya, and Morgan</image:title>
<image:caption>I liked Morgan's posture here. He recently complained about not having any pants on in the picture. I just loved how contorted his body was and how much light bounced off his little body. If you notice Katya's hand you can see it moves quite a bit. I had just finished a comic book on tropes you find in in comics like ziggy lines to make a little figure have action and I couldn't see a good reason why that shouldn't work in a painting. You see this in Futurist work, but I just want more fine drawing and weight. By weight I mean can you feel the space beneath something.. like fabric or a shoe. Of course I mean this to look like the Trinity. Nick deserves that.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Portrait Gallery - John Kalisz</image:title>
<image:caption>John is the current colorist for Batman. I am such fanboy that I was just too delighted to paint his portrait, his shoes, his yoga bag, and his DC comic bag. I saturated this with a spectrum of alternating primary and secondary compliments.. i.e. red and green, purple and orange.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Colleen is an art curator and art restorer out of Stanford. She and her partner Tamara posed in my kitchen. She made this calendar of the phases of the moon for me in the background. In the Dutch baroque landscapes always mean that there is a romantic passion present in the room. I loved her denim jacket.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Trompe l'Oeil - Trompe L'oeil IV</image:title>
<image:caption>My first real patron was an accountant named Charles Fears for Grace Church in Manhattan. He paid for several trips to India with his purchase of my work. Next to him is a cover of the Cambridge University Monthly Magazine. I loved painting Chip in two directions at once. The tape is a classic trompe l'oeil trope.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Trompe l'Oeil - Trompe L'oeil II "Volk"</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a painting of my studio wall with 3 different kinds of landscapes. One a Corot on the far right, the second postcard is Williamsburg where I used to live. The third is a photograph I took of the Tenderloin in San Francisco and this mural of a medieval girl. So this is really a portrait, a landscape, and a still life. Troupe L'oeil has this magical post-modernism to it that is also distinctly an American tradition.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Here is my studio wall again with a San Francisco native: the Ghirardelli chocolate box with the Goldfinch by Fabritius on the cover celebrating its exhibition at the DeYoung Museum. Fabritius, a pupil of Rembrandt and an inspiration to Vermeer died in the Armory explosion in Delft in 1654. That's Amal Murgian in savasana on the left.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Trompe l'Oeil - Art and Antiques</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the painting that exhibited at the John F. Peto invitational Trompe L'oeil Show. This painting in particular demonstrates the peculiar Post-Modernist times we live in. There is such an abundance of images available from all periods of human history, and I can only understate this point of course. We live now with multiplicity and here I am only saying it lives on our walls and in our lives.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Trompe l'Oeil - How are Things?</image:title>
<image:caption>This is really naughty, but my friend from art school in NY, Jen Maloney made this How are Things postcard and sent it to me. It's her painting of some very personal items. I repainted it, of course, trompe l'oeil style with my name on it instead. The rest of the images are notes and magnets attached to my fridge. The question "How are Things?" is both epistemological and phenomenological. What is Life and what is this in front of us? With the references to abuse mentioned perhaps we also ask how things are. Well.. things are bad.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Trompe l'Oeil - The Hunger</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a reference to the David Bowie film from 1983. This painting is a series of rabid objects. The bust of Pope Clement IV from the Ashmolean seemed peculiarly venal to me underneath a postcard of a cat eating a bird by Picasso stuck to my studio wall with an Apple sticker.. with a bite taken out.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Trompe l'Oeil - Trompe L'oeil XXXI</image:title>
<image:caption>Of course this painting is all about this kid's back. I saw this painting by Caravaggio in the National Gallery in London of a young boy being whipped. The Baroque is full of images like this in chiaroscuro and its the kind of decadent sexy image of the the Lord that led us directly to the Reformation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Ngoce was a pharmacist from San Diego who decided to give that all up, marry Sid, and become a professional hair stylist in the Toni and Guy method. She cuts my hair, of course.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work of RAC Design Studio - David Brown</image:title>
<image:caption>David, here, in my kitchen initiated my interest in this series of kitchen portraits. There is a movement called "kitchen sink" painters. Painters like Walter Sickert who washed their brushes in their kitchen sink like I do. I have a chess piece floor like the Dutch Baroque painters, and David's big lower lip and angular forehead reminds me of the Baroque painter Velasquez. It is common in Baroque painting to see paintings of painting!</image:caption>

<image:title>Work of RAC Design Studio - Self Portrait</image:title>
<image:caption>Speaking of the Dutch Baroque here I am calling back the Vermeer work "The Allegory of Painting" Another painter besides the Baroque whom I looked at closely for full size portraits was Corot whose small näive works I found purely motivated and wonderful. The kind of painting that makes you want to paint.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work of RAC Design Studio - Nick, Katya, and Morgan</image:title>

<image:title>Work of RAC Design Studio - John Kalisz</image:title>
